Oxidized Bitumen 85/35 or blown asphalt 85/35 (blown bitumen 85/35) is a form of bitumen that is manufactured by blowing air over pure bitumen (similar to penetration bitumen). Oxidized Bitumen 85/35 has a lower penetration grade and a greater softening point than conventional bitumen. Airflow polymerizes the asphaltene included in this bitumen, transforming it into stretchy bitumen. As denoted by the symbol R, this bitumen is referred to as Rubberized Bitumen due to its rubber properties. These figures represent the point of softening point and the degree of penetration. OXIDIZED BITUMEN 85/35 PRODUCTION PROCESS:
The BBU reactor at the refinery must first expose penetration-grade bitumen to hot air at a temperature that falls anywhere between 240 and 270 degrees Celsius in order to produce oxidized bitumen 85/35. This requires the refinery to maintain a temperature that ranges between 220 and 230 degrees Celsius. The reaction that takes place within the reactor between the hydrogen atoms of bitumen and the oxygen atoms of air is induced by heated air. This reaction takes place between the bitumen and the air.
The next thing that takes place is that it starts to create some steam, which then has to have the oxidation chamber emptied of it once it has been produced. This results in the presence of oxidized bitumen as a direct consequence.
